System Upgrade - Adobe Reader
August 28, 2003
Adobe Acrobat is just a real pain in the ... I wish that most sites would quit
supporting it (publishing data in *.pdf format).
The main problems are
- Old versions of the reader won't display anything when opening certain
pdf-files created with new software.
- The new reader won't install on the older operating systems -
specifically Windows 95 and Windows 98.
- It loads a lot of data on the c-drive even when you tell it not to.
It finally got so bad that all I saw were blank pages when I tried to
read a *.pdf file.
I installed Adobe Reader 5.0.5 under Windows 98.
It loaded over 6 MBytes to the c-drive,
about 19 MBytes on the e-drive
There were lots of registry entries
(which means that every program on my system
will now run a little slower).
It is interesting that version 5.0.5 is the last version to support
Windows 98 - all the newer versions require at least
Windows 98 SE.
At any rate, it seems to work without any additional problems.
