ISPs - GoDaddy

For 2 years, I have used, and been happy with, GoDaddy ... so I purchased an additional hosting plan for a local club - a Deluxe plan.

My biggest problem with GoDaddy has always been the mostly worthless on-line help ... but they outdid themselves this time - I am totally lost.

email

The Deluxe plan (according to the advertisement) provides But ... when I tried to use these Well ... I'm totally confused It is possible that the advertising is correct and that the configuration screens are wrong ... but it does not give me a warm fuzzy.

And what does Hosting Pack / 50 mean. As far as I can tell, I have read all the available on-line documentation and this is not described.

Configuring Linux

I wanted to provide a full featured (whatever that may mean) web site for a local group. I thought Pretty generic stuff. Unfortunately, GoDaddy does not provide a configuration guide or tutorial. Being fairly naive, I installed joomla thinking it would have all of these (it doesn't). It turned out that the wiki software I wanted (MediaWiki) required PHP 5.1 or better ... the default is PHP 4.3. This is controlled via the menu's Content / Languages or the Content / Add on Languages icon.

Each of these requires a separate MySQL database.

I am still looking for Calendar and mail list software.

Hosting a second domain

I purchased the Deluxe plan so that I could host multiple sites (it is what the ad claimed). However, the GoDaddy help was worthless (again).

When you purchase a new domain, GoDaddy automatically sets it up as a parked page. It is not clear what change needs to be made.

Somewhere in the labyrinth of options, you will find a link something like Manage Hosting Accounts - click it. On the next page, click Manage Account next to your Deluxe account - this may open a new page, or update one that is already open - very confusing. On that page, select Settings / Domain Management. Click on the Add Domain button (this action is NOT in the GoDaddy help). There will not be a list of available domains (even though the help says that there is). Instead, start typing and any available domains will be displayed.

Well, I did all that and the url is still displaying the GoDaddy parked page. Based on the help file, it may take up to 8 hours for the changes to work. Funny, the parked page was available in only a few minutes.
