| May 16, 2008 (Fri - 8:30 pm) | Arsenic in Ground Water
Aquatic Chemistry and Mitigation through a Sustainable Filtration Technology Abul Hussam - George Mason University The presence of toxic levels of arsenic in groundwater of Bangladesh and in many parts of the world is now known to cause serious health problems including cancer. Arsenic is primarily present as inorganic forms, where arsenite is the most toxic species. This talk will cover the aquatic chemistry of these species and the phenomena of natural attenuation of arsenic species in groundwater with experimental data and chemical equilibria. Finally, the chemistry of a simple and extremely efficient method for the filtration of arsenic species from groundwater will be discussed. The method uses a composite iron matrix as the arsenic scavenger material. This presentation will cover the present crisis of potable water in Bangladesh and its possible solution through the development of a sustainable filtration technology called SONO filter. | May 7, 2008 (Wed - 7:45 pm) | Program: Cave Minerals - specimens we DON'T Collect
Speaker: Tom Tucker Caves contain hundreds of mineral species, from calcite to tyuyamunite, in multitudes of beautiful and sometimes exotic forms. We'll explore some of them, and explore the relationships between cavers and mineral collectors. We all enjoy nature's beauty, and need to work together for our mutual benefit and understanding. | May 12, 2008 (Mon - 7:45 pm) | Program: Diamonds-Out of Africa
Speaker: Denise Nelson This is a first-hand look inside the operations at the DeBeers mines of Namibia and South Africa. This program includes a power point presentation of her recent visit to the Premier mine, in Cullinan, South Africa, and the alluvial pocketbeech mines in the huge restricted "Sperrgebiet", the "Forbidden" diamond mining area of Namibia. An account of the visit to the off-shore diamond dredging ship "Glomar Pacific" completes the truly insightful look into a world rarely revealed.
